Submission Series 3/10: Kimura

May 22, 2012

Now Available in the Gracie Store

On the third Submission Series t-shirt, we pay tribute to the Japanese champion, Masahiko Kimura. On October 23, 1951, Helio Gracie and Masahiko Kimura faced off at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This would be the first time that a world jiu-jitsu championship bout would be held outside of Japan. The fight was a submission only bout and was set for two ten-minute rounds. Kimura was so sure of immediate victory, he stated that Helio should be considered the winner if he could only avoid defeat for three minutes. When the fight began, the much heavier Kimura was able to throw Helio so many times that Helio later stated that he felt as though he were in a blender. The first 10 minutes passed and Kimura still wasn't able to submit Helio. Three minutes into the second round, Kimura was able to lock the reverse "ude-garami," the Japanese word for reverse "arm entanglement," on Helio, and fearing that Helio wouldn't tap out, Carlos Gracie, Helio's older brother, threw in the towel forfeiting the match to Kimura. Ever since that match, the reverse "ude-garami " has been called the "Kimura Armlock," out of respect for the Japanese champion.

SS 3/10 T-shirt Design Details

Technique: Kimura Armlock
Fact: Originally known as the reverse "Ude-Garami," this shoulder lock was renamed when it was used by the Japanese champion, Masahiko Kimura, to defeat Helio Gracie in 1951.
Application: Secure the opponent's wrist, wrap their arm, secure your own wrist, keep their arm bent at 90 degrees, step over their head, twist their hand northward.
Diagnosis: Complete rotator cuff rupture with multidirectional dislocation. May also cause elbow joint dislocation and/or spiral fracture of the humerus bone.
Recovery Time: 6-8 months after surgery, if you're lucky.
